Snippets from the Classroom and Beyond

No W57 April 2007

Well, here we are again, heading rapidly towards the end of another term. The Spring Term ends on 5th April with an Easter Service in St. Mary’s church at 1400. The Summer Term then takes up the baton on 24th April. Time seems to pass with almost indecent haste these days – or is it something to do with age on my part?

My first picture shows some of the characters portrayed by the children on World Book Dressing Up Day. I must say that the pupils do enjoy dressing up on this occasion. The winners of their respective groups were :- Year 6, Tay: Year 5, Alexandra Wood: Year 4, Alfie Coles: Year 3, Harriet Wood: Year 2, Jack Guven: Year 1, William Barclay: and, from Reception, Alfred Egglestone. Well done to all who took part and made a real effort – that includes the parentage!

Reporting further on events over the last month, the 3D Dance Event at the Barnfield Theatre was deemed a great success. Words and expressions like “fantastic”, “went extremely well,”, “very proud”, and “lucky enough to see” seem to indicate that this was, indeed, the case. Obviously a lot of hard work had gone into the display and a great big “Well Done” is the order of the day. Staying on the “Arty” side of things, Years 3 and 4 took part in the QECC Rotary Concert that I mentioned in March’s Snippets. The report back on this is again of a high order. 10 out of the 11 schools in the CLC participated. The Taiko Group performed at the beginning of the concert, and our children sang and played ukeleles(those that were lucky enough to be taught). The standards were very high and the children sang and played beautifully and were very good throughout the proceedings. All agreed that it was thoroughly enjoyable. On a more individual note, both Charlotte Hill and Alara Guven passed their Grade 1 Flute examinations. Congratulations.

Time is now starting to press on the Opera Group (Class 4). A rehearsal at the Cygnet Theatre on 27th April and THE PERFORMANCE on 19th June are looming large. I know they have all been working hard at the project so here’s wishing the very best of luck to them. I know it will be a success. I bet you that this one hits the headlines! The Taiko Group goes from strength to strength with at least 4 bookings already on the books. I can’t give any details as some of them are yet to be confirmed.

Now, a short break to mention sport. I banged on about Cross Country Running in last month’s edition but this sport does seem to be high profile at the moment. A recent competition in Exeter saw Alara Guven, Michael Brailey, Charlotte Hill, Harriet Wood, Harry Strong, Fraser Maule, Katie Grist, Elliot Folland, Jack Strong and James Bowden represented the school. Although no one was placed, they all did well against a strong field from a great number of schools. A tournament at Blundells saw CB fielding runners in the Girls Under 11 (1½ miles) and Boys Under 11 (2 miles) races, and the Girls Under 9 and Boys Under 9 (both at 1 mile). Despite it being very muddy all participants enjoyed it and a good time was had by all! Still on sport, the Swimming Gala on 14th March saw Holly Chadney come 2nd overall in the girls 25 metre freestyle. Considering that 11 schools took part, that is a most creditable effort. Well done Holly. Giving advance notice, there will be a netball tournament at the beginning of next term.

On, then, to charity and Red Nose Day. Although the photo on the left doesn’t show them too well in black and white, these are some of the “Wackiest Hairstyles” that appeared in the school. The winners were as follows:- Reception, Jack Trescher: Year 1, Alfred Amiss: Year 2, Lauren Parsons: Year 3, Georgian Tuly and Harriet Wood: Year 4, Alexandra Marshall: Year 5, Alexandra Wood: Year 6, Michael Brailey.  The winner of the “Funkiest Shoes” competition was Jordan Taylor of Class 3. This was all super fun and greatly enjoyed but as well as the fun, the children raised the staggering amount of £227.00. Of particular note was the £33.00 raised on the scratch cards and £17.65 made by Elsa, Alexandra and Katie on the Cake Stall. A big Well Done is due all round!

As CB’s contribution to Science Week, the school held a Science Day on 12th March. The photo on the left shows a balloon powered rocket about to launch a load across the classroom. That was Mrs Brimacombe’s contribution. Other groupings covered Healthy Eating, “The Crime Scene”, and Experiments. All good practical stuff.

Did you know that it is six years since Cheriton Bishop School started the Walking Bus scheme – one of Devon’s pilot schemes? By the time you read this , County Councillor Nick Way will have visited to present the school with new jackets and bibs. District Councillor Dave Pullen will also be in attendance. Expect some local press interest!

So, that just leaves the diary for you:-

5th April – Easter Service – St Mary’s Church – 2pm

5th April – End of Spring Term

24th April – Start of Summer Term
