Snippets from the Classroom and Beyond

W66 April 2008

I thought that I would start this issue with a quick look at the new buildings and show how they fit in with the rest of the school. The first photo shows the new additions viewed from the car park. On the left is the new storage facility with the new staff building beyond and classroom three visible beyond the hedge. A tarmac path has been laid from the car park to the school buildings – a major improvement. The tarmac extends into a new playground area in front of the staff building. The next photo shows the new storage facility with the church in the background and the school “garden” and gravel path in front of it. We move on to the next page and the following photograph which gives some idea of the new playground in front of the new building. Finally, again on the next page, the new disability-friendly ramp to the door of the Staff Building showing the proximity to classroom 2. Altogether a worthwhile improvement to the overall facilities and Class 2 are really enjoying the expansion of their classroom in the old Resources area.

.

Now, before I forget, the school has good reason to thank the new owners of the village shop for their generous gesture of raffling off a big Easter egg to raise funds for the school. This raffle raised the marvellous total of £150.00 . Thank you very much Maria and John, your efforts are very much appreciated. A little bird told me that the actual amount was £143.00 but the winner of the egg put in a further £7.00 to make it up to £150.00. Aren’t there some smashing people around? Still on money raising, 14th March, Sports Relief Day, was very successful. Thanks to Ian Parsons for his organisation. There is no total of money raised yet since sponsorship monies are still coming in, but I bet you the total will be great. World Book Day on 6th of March was most enjoyable with the children dressing up as their favourite characters from their favourite books. I hope to have a photograph or two by the time of the next issue of Snippets.

On the activity front, the visit to the “Living Coast” attraction did go ahead on 19th March. The weather was kind and the visit was enjoyed by all who went and, more importantly, it gave the children a live illustration of the animals of the Arctic and Antarctic areas of the world – if you remember, that is the theme of this term.

In the area of sporting activities, the school sent two teams to QECC for an orienteering competitions day. Our teams came from years 5 and 6 and, although neither team was placed they all thoroughly enjoyed the day. The event included map reading, team work and a lot of running. With practice, they could do well. That’s a big well done to all involved. Looking ahead somewhat, CB will be hosting a Small Schools’ Netball Tournament next term on May 2nd. Tag Rugby will be in the offing next term, as well.

I have to report that the Easter Service in St. Mary’s Church went off very well. It seemed strange having the Easter Service before Good Friday, nevertheless, the busy calendar and the early arrival of Easter made the arrangement necessary. I very much regret that I didn’t get there to witness the service. I have some good news on the musical front. Results from music exams are good. On the flute, Charlotte Hill  achieved a Grade Two Pass. Brittany Waylett  and Ellen Pearce achieved  Grade One on the drums and on the violin James Culwick achieved Grade One, with Alexandra Wood and Katie Grist both achieving Grade Three. Well done to all of them. It takes a lot of hard work and practice to get these results.

The calendar:

4th April – Spring Term ends

21st April – Summer Term begins

25th April – Swimming Lessons (5 weeks) Class 3 at Lords Meadow

2nd May – Small Schools’ Netball Tournament – Cheriton Bishop

5th May – Bank Holiday

12th-16th May – KS2 SAT’s

26th-30th May – Half Term

So, that’s it for this issue. After the short Easter Bank Holiday break we now face two short weeks back at school and then, on 4th April, it’s time for the Easter Holidays – Spring holidays I suppose we should call them! Thank goodness Easter is only this early infrequently. Have a super break and bring the children back refreshed and ready for the summer term.
