It doesn’t seem to matter how much you are expecting things to happen, they always catch you just that little bit off guard – it’s the end of the summer term already. I think that this year has been somewhat different because of the lack of summer weather – I’m really still waiting for the summer to start! That having been said, it would be wrong of me to make light of our weather without acknowledging the dreadful flooding that is bringing misery to hundreds of thousands of our fellow citizens in the Midlands and the West of England. I think I could probably speak for all of us in hoping and praying that the floodwaters reach their peak sooner rather than later, and that they recede quickly and allow for a rapid clean up and resumption of normal life.

As you see on the left, the summer edition of The Cherry B has hit the newsstands and again I sit in awe of the producers of this publication. The editors this term are Alexandra Marshall, Elliot Folland, Chris Harwood, Molly Barratt, Tazmin Barratt, Gwyn Thurgarland and Mark Toms. Well done to you all.

Last month, I told you about the success of the Class 4 Opera “Celebriteez” (which features on the front page of the ‘Cherry B’) at the Cygnet Theatre. Well, a DVD of the show has been produced and Mrs McCracken is carefully hoarding copies in the school office. For a certain fee, and providing she is in a good mood, she will be selling them to those interested.

On 16th July, the school held a Design & Technology Open Day. My next photo shows Classes 1 and 2 hard at work preparing their Butterfly Feeders. I hope that all the parentage that managed to visit the school during the day had a useful time watching the children working so well. A big thank you is due to those who did attend.

I suppose that the next picture (below) should be labelled “Practical French”.  Enacting a scene in a French café the children are acquainting themselves with croissants, pain au chocolat and jus d’orange. The menu on the table is (obviously) in French and there is a whole Gallic flavour to the scene, albeit that it’s on the sports field! I’ve just taken a quick peek at the picture in colour and enlarged, and they actually have the choice of jus de pomme and jus d’ananas as well. Come on, you Francophiles, work those ones out. It seems to me like a good way to make a language and way of life come alive to the children.

Regrettably, the planned Sports Day had to be cancelled due to, yes, you guessed it, bad weather. It is hoped that we will be able to hold a Sports Day early next term.

I am not sure about progress with the planned new building. The somewhat optimistic programme has dropped behind a little and I don’t expect to see any progress over the summer holidays. It is still going ahead, though.

There are a couple of interesting points from the Head Teacher’s recent letter to parents. The planned After School care will not be immediately available at the start of next term. It’s all a matter of staffing. Also, to accommodate changes in Government Sports requirements, it is proposed to change the timetable for the school day. No doubt the parentage will learn more about this soon.

At the Valedictory Service in St. Mary’s Church we said goodbye to our ten leavers from Year Six. We wish them well as they face the next big step in their education, the move up to Secondary School. Good luck to them all in the future. They have been given a good grounding at Cheriton Bishop in preparation for this step.

I have put in 3 photos from the service, the first (above) showing one of the leavers giving his report on his time at CB. They all seemed to be very articulate youngsters.

This next photo shows certificates for reading prowess being granted to two youngsters and two of our leavers – all boys.

The service was “crowned” – is that the right word? – by a virtuoso performance  on the Tai Ko drums by two of our leavers, Scarlett Brown and Michael Brailey,  before John Tutton gave the closing prayer.
