No, I haven’t “come over all religious” – I just think that we have a very beautiful church in our village and, in the absence of school activity photographs this month I have put in a few pictures of our church that I have taken over the years. It is very well worth a visit just to marvel at the effort that must have gone in to getting the solid granite pillars that support the roof to the village. The first shot is the more usual aspect taken from the south east corner of the graveyard

On then, to the school, I have got lots of sports news for you but we’ll start off with more academic themes. As part of the move into secondary education for our children, a series of activities are arranged by QECC to help them into that transition. The scheme is called Transition Liaison. So we saw Year 6 attending the Library Roadshow at QECC on 18th June. It was enjoyed by all the youngsters who attended. As part of a wider opportunities initiative across the Crediton Learning Community this term, Ben Hudson has been giving all the children experience of music through ICT. I’m not exactly sure quite what this means and I will have to check up further on this subject

On, perhaps a more mundane front, the school car park has recently received a new surface. I don’t know whether they ran out of material before they got as far as the entrance gate, but the main area does look far better now. Most of the old surface had been displaced by the vehicles using the park. It does actually enhance the overall appearance of the school.

Looking now at the next photo, we see the approach up the cobbled path from the lower gate towards the porch. At the height of summer with the trees in full leaf, it really does present a picture.

Well, I promised sports news and this is what you are going to get. After all the rave reviews about their achievements in last month’s Snippets (and the Express and Echo), our tag rugby “A” team achieved a further success at the Tag Rugby Festival at Crediton on 13th June. They came 3rd out of 24, yes 24, teams  and were only narrowly beaten by Haywards in the semi final. Haywards was the team that they beat in the final at the last tournament. Willowbank from Crediton were the eventual winners. Well done to the children and all who have trained them, coached them and transported them.

Our soccer team was in action recently with a friendly match against our old rivals Tedburn St. Mary. Despite all best efforts Tedburn came out on top. Another well done is due to all the effort the children put in and, don’t worry, I’m sure that we will get the better of Tedburn soon.

A quick comment here about the photo on the left here. Early on a bright summer’s morning, before the sun goes behind one of the churchyard yew trees, sunlight floods through the stained glass east window throwing a splash of colour onto the wall. It is really lovely. This will be in colour in the web edition of Snippets.

More sport now, with a focus on that traditional summer sport of cricket. Once again Sandford Cricket Club are providing cricket coaching for Class 4 every Thursday afternoon. The coach, Doug, is a Zimbabwean cricket player. The Kwik Cricket season is upon us now and there will be tournaments at Spreyton on 2nd July, and at Sandford on 11th July. I’m sure our team will give a good account of itself!

On 20th June, we had Years 3, 4, 5 and 6 pupils representing CB at the Area Athletics at QECC. I haven’t yet seen the results but I am reliably informed that we achieved some successes. I will try to remember to include them in next month’s issue. The children thoroughly enjoyed the day despite the presentation ceremony being rained off, and Miss Colton, our PE teacher was well pleased with everybody’s efforts.

The final church photo: this one is taken from the northeast on a fine summer’s evening. It is not a very common viewpoint.

All that now remains is the calendar:

Dartmoor Railway Progress:- trains are running from Exeter to Okehampton on summer Sundays. If you have the chance, do support these trains which First Great Western run and Devon County Council subsidise. They depend on your custom. Incidentally, they also stop at Crediton to pick up and set down passengers. Negotiations continue with a prospective new owner.
