June 2006
Now, what are the ladies
doing here? Well, the Christmas Fayre raised
sufficient funds for the proposed wild life area to get off the ground in a
manner of speaking. Tracey Wood, Karen Maule and
Sally Everton are seen here working on the
On the sporting front,
CB hosted a netball tournament on 28th April. Spreyton,
Dunsford, Newton St Cyres
and Thorverton all sent teams and CB put in two
teams. It was a great competition and Dunsford (on
the right) emerged as winners after a very tight match against CB. The PTFA
presented a cup and medals to both winners and runners up, and certificates
were presented to all who participated. It was a great day for all concerned
and a fine way to bring the netball season to a close. Mrs Sam Cann has taken over the reins of the Cross Country Club and
a group of the children entered the Great West Family Run on 30th

from the PTFA:- I reported that they would be holding
a fashion show in the village hall. They did, and it was, by all accounts, a
very successful event which raised a goodly amount of money how much, I
havent been told. However, I do have photographic evidence of the event and
these show Laura Moulding and Liz Pearce doing some very professional looking modelling.
They are very brave to do that! Well done to all who organised, took part in
and attended the Fashion Show.
Still
to go in the month of May, the whole school will be decamping to Paignton Zoo for the day on 24th May. I hope
were not planning to swap children for zoo animals !!
It promises to be a grand day out. On 26th, there will be a
Spotlight Celebration Assembly and Dance Performance at
Mrs.
Watkins felt that this production is more suited to older children and we have
something else in mind for the younger children, details of which will follow
after half term.

Regrettably,
the swimming pool is going to be de-commissioned this summer. Lack of use last
summer and the cost and work required to keep it going have forced the decision
on the PTFA to withdraw funding. It is hoped to sell the pool liner to help
funds

That
covers most of the calendar for the rest of this term. I would like to cover
something that affects the school, in its own way,
and the village as a whole. On the evening of the 13th, there was a
fire at The Old Thatch which put the pub out of action for some time. Its a
personal tragedy for David, the owner, and his family. This includes his son,
who attends CB school. Im sure that we would all wish them the best in the
rebuilding. The Old Thatch is known nationwide and, though we may not have
noticed visitors directly attributable to it, Im sure there have been. It has put Cheriton
Bishop on the map over the years and become a local landmark. From a different
aspect, it was uplifting to see villagers, young and old, joining in the rescue
of furnishings and fittings and to watch local farmers using their equipment to
clear away the reed. It was a true village effort and reminds us all of what
can be achieved if we all pull together.
Now,
I have to correct an omission from last months Snippets. As well as Michael Brailey, both Alexandra Wood and Katie Grist featured in
the Exeter Music Festival with their violins and achieved high standards. Katie
came first in her section. Congratulations to all of you.
