Snippets from the Classroom and Beyond

W 67 June 2008

Did you see the article on page 54 of the Express and Echo on Friday 23rd May about the Tag Rugby Tournament at Crediton? There were four full colour photographs of one or more members of CB “A” Team and they were super action photos as well – except for the prize winners! Yes, out of a total of some thirteen teams, Cheriton Bishop A Tag Rugby team won the final. Well done to all concerned. The Express and Echo have very kindly given me permission to use their shots in this article which means that: all photographs of the tag rugby tournament are reproduced by courtesy of the Exeter Express and Echo newspaper    I am including a couple more rugby photographs than in the paper Newsletter. They were playing Haywards in the final (playing in the striped shirts). Harry Strong, above, just gets tagged as does Ellen Pearce, on the right. Both look as though they are on storming runs.

They had to put in a lot of defending as well. It was no walkover.  The victorious team are seen below holding the shield and their medals. The team members were :- Fraser Maule, Ellen Pearce, Josh Pearce, Harry Strong, Charlotte Hill, Alexandra Wood and Josh Badham.

Still on sports, at a small schools’ netball tournament held at CB, our A team won the trophy and the B team weren’t far behind them. At the same time, a soccer match between Bow and ourselves resulted in our teams winning (A team) and drawing (B team). It looks as though our sports teams are really on a winning streak. A big thank you must be made to all those members of staff and parents who put in such a lot of effort to the coaching and training. Well done and thank you!

From sports I’m now going to change to a cake baking competition. Chef Michael Caines very kindly came along to judge the children’s efforts and a hard job that was too. As you can see from the accompanying photographs, there is a wealth of talent around. The cakes were a really colourful display. I leave it a member of  the School Council to report :

“On the 19th May Cheriton Bishop School held an extra special cake competition. Celebrity Chef, Michael caines, judged the cakes. Many cakes were entered for the competition but only two from KS2 and KS1 could be chosen. Bailey’s cupcakes and Joshua’s cupcakes won for KS1 while Rafe’s bee cake and Holly & Rhiannon’s beach cake won for KS2 All the cakes were very impressive and it was a really successful competition”

I should point out that it was the School Council, under the guidance of Mrs Wood, who organised the event. Congratulations to all concerned. The photographs, in full colour, will appear in the web version of Snippets on the village web site.

The Busy Bees after school club continues to flourish and is proving to be very popular with the children. It’s interesting to look through the other after school activities. On Monday and Wednesday lunchtimes, the Gardening/ Wildlife Club meet. (Yes, it’s still an after school activity because it’s after the morning session). Monday afternoon after school sees the Dance Club with Miss Goddard in charge. Tuesdays are set aside for Tag Rugby training, Wednesdays have Tennis training, Thursdays see Athletics with Mr Jenkins and Friday has Taiko practice. That’s one heck of an activity list for a small school!

After half term there will be an inter-house Reading Talent competition. This follows on from successful Spelling and Tables competitions held in previous terms. On the staff side, two more student teachers join us after half term to assist with Class 4. After the children, this is one of the most useful areas that the school works in. If we can give the future teachers a good, basic grounding in their duties by working in happy and friendly surroundings, it will set them off in a good frame of mind as they work through the rest of their training.

Dartmoor Railway Progress:- As far as I am aware, the company, ECT, are now looking to sell off the catering equipment in the Buffet at Okehampton. Despite a statement to the contrary by ECT, trains will be running from Exeter to Okehampton on summer Sundays as has been the practice previously. If you have the chance, do support these trains which First Great Western run and Devon County Council subsidise. They depend on your custom. Incidentally, they also stop at Crediton to pick up and set down passengers. ECT stands for Ealing Community Transport – ironic, isn’t it?
