As
you will see by this month’s photos, the theme is taken from the school’s Sport
Relief efforts. The first two pictures show the children starting off procedures
with the “Walking Bus” down the length of
Still on the topic of raising funds for
charities, the school has quietly been collecting money for the Loose
Change Trust by collecting loose change from all and sundry over a fair length
of time to support the provision of food, clothing medicine and shelter for the
street children of Romania. I have just read a lovely letter of thanks from the
charity in response to the school’s collection of £178.58. It does show us how
lucky we are in this country generally when we read about the plight of these
youngsters in
Last month I commented on the Easter Service at
St. Mary’s. I also have to report the results of a competition to decorate
Easter Eggs. I have to publish a caveat with these results – I can’t read the
Secretary’s writing very well and I might get some spelling wrong(sorry
Crackers!). Anyway, here goes:
Class
1 Winner:- Charlotte Brazier
Class
2 Winner:- Harry Tremlett
Class
3 Winner:- Emmy Shearer
Class
4 Winner:- Katie Grist
Well done to all who took part and a special
well done to the winners.
This term really started with a splash – Class 3
started their swimming lessons at Lord’s Meadow. These will be carrying on for
the next 5 weeks. Classes 1 and 2 start their swimming
lessons on 13th June, after half term. Still on the subject
of sport, the School is organising a Small Schools’ Netball Tournament on
2nd
May which will be taking place here in Cheriton
Bishop. I’m sure that it will be successful both from the organisational and
the competition points of view.
Cherry B School is well thought of as a good
experience for Student Teachers and we frequently find two or more such
students learning the ropes several times a year. This term is no exception. We
have the Misses Rachel Gunn and Sarah Healey and Mr. Benjamin Tuckett.
The latter will be working with Class 3, Rachel will
be with Class 2 and Sarah with Class1. Welcome to you all and I’m sure everyone
would wish you all the best and hope that you gain a really good insight into
the operation of a small school.
“Healthy
Snacks” have started again this term. This is intended to get the youngsters to
consider healthy foods and get them away from all those unhealthy snacks etc.
that children love! “Busy Bees” is proving to be a success and will be building
up further this term, I’m sure. Taiko Drumming and all the other after school
activities are again underway so that there should be no excuse for any calls
of “I’m bored”! Presaging things to come, Mr. Mockridge
from the Grenville House organisation will be
visiting the school on 6th May to discuss the details of the annual
Residential Course for years 5 and 6. These courses are always exciting and
stimulating for the children and they really look forward to them.

Well,
that’s all this month for the school.
A short note here on a subject that comes under the “beyond”
title.
I wrote an article about the Dartmoor Raiway some
months ago. I am sorry to report that the owning company, ECT, has recently and
fairly abruptly pulled the plug on passenger trains, the Okehampton
and Meldon Buffets and the Okehampton
Station Model Shop. They hope to sell the railway. Volunteers and “Friends” of
the railway are considering what course of action to take!
