I am going to start this
edition of Snippets with a short anecdote. It was on Tuesday morning, the 19th
September, if my memory serves me correctly, and I was walking my dog, Jess,
around the village. We had been to the shop to pick up the newspaper and were
walking down
Having
now mentioned a charity, that links me in nicely with the illustration on the
left. The school will be holding a “Jeans for Genes Day” on 6th
October. This is to raise money for a number of children’s charities who are
carrying out research into childhood genetic deficiencies and diseases and
supporting those who suffer from them. I am going to list them for you and I
hope you will not be too overwhelmed:- Great Ormond Street Hospital Children’s
Charity, PiA, CGD, mps, WellChild,
SPARKS, Genetic Interest Group, Fragile X Society, TssS
and the XP Support Group. You can see from this impressive list that this is no
flash-in-the-pan appeal and the school sets aside this one day per year to join
in with others around the country in raising both money and awareness of the problems
faced. If you want any more information, try the internet and www.jeansforgenes.com will help you
out.
We
have two new Governors at the school now. Mr. Everton and Mr. Maule were both voted in as Parent Governors at the end of
last term. Congratulations, Gentlemen, I’m sure you’ll find it a rewarding
time.
Now, on to some interesting news. The Walking Bus has
moved it’s start point to the Good Knight Inn car
park. This doesn’t mean a change of brewers (Joke). It means that the Old
Thatch Inn car park is now not available because the start of rebuilding the Old
Thatch is imminent and the car park will be used as a base for that work. Thank
you, David, for allowing the school to use your car park, and thanks to the
Good Knight for allowing the bus to start from there. It has taken from mid-May
to now to get planning consent for the rebuild. It’s called bureaucracy.
A
quick reminder for any of you who have never seen the school’s mosaic emblem of “Cherry B” – Short
for Cheriton Bishop. The mosaic represents a cherry
tree being attended to by a couple of bees – hence Cherry Bee.
What
have Board Games, Dance and Drama, Tag Rugby, Football, Netball, Taiko Drumming
and Art got in common? They are all the subjects of the various clubs and
activities being run after school for the children. This is in addition to learning
to play the violin, guitar and drums which are available for tuition
. There are, as you can see, many mind-broadening activities for the
children that the school and parents can offer outside the world of academe. .
On
the immediate sporting front, CB will be a football and netball competition at
QE for the whole of the “Crediton Learning Community”
(CLC) schools on 12th October. Good luck to our teams involved.
Class 4 have now started their swimming lessons at Crediton
Leisure Centre. The course takes ten weeks and they are taught by a qualified
teacher.
I
have a confession to make. I was given the names of three more children who won
music awards in the summer and I have lost the piece of paper they were written
on. Congratulations to you all, you know who you are. If I find your names
later, I promise I will mention you in the next Snippets.
