Snippets from the Classroom and Beyond

No W70 September 2008

As is normal for this (late summer) edition of Snippets, there is no real news of school activities since the school broke up for the summer holidays sufficiently early for me to cover the last remaining activities of the summer term. They don’t start back to school until 3rd September and so there is nothing to report for this edition. At the end of August’s Snippets I intimated that I was going to mention the “Know Your Village” gathering of 2006. I came across a cutting that I took from the Crediton Country Courier which featured this event. Following success with photos from the Express and Echo, I contacted the Courier and they sent me the shots and kindly gave me permission to use them. Whilst in black and white in the Newsletter  issue, we are able to show them in colour – to full effect! First to feature is the WI, the Women’s Institute, that quintessential part of rural village life. The good ladies of Cheriton Bishop play an active part in the Tedburn St. Mary WI and they appear here in this photo (above). I am not sure when they intend to produce their discreet naughty calendar.

Next in the frame are the Young Farmers. Again, we combine our talents and the Tedburn St Mary & Cheriton Bishop Young Farmers’ Club was well represented in the village hall as shown (right). Where the young male farmers were is left to the imagination. It is really smashing to see the Young Farmers keeping things going.

Keeping with the subject of youth, the Scouts were present in great form. As most of you will know, their local HQ is up at Crofter’s Meadow in the village. Again, talents and resources are shared with Tedburn. The photograph (left) shows both the staff and scouts at their village hall display.

With three churches in the village, St. Mary’s Church, the Methodist Church and West Down Chapel, they got together to present a united display. Out of interest, there are several  combined celebrations over the year which include occasions such as Harvest Supper etc. It is grand to see such good relations between them all.

The final group photo (below) is of Folkus, Cheriton Bishop’s own folk singing group. We get together at a different venue every Friday evening to enjoy a good sing-song. Great to exercise the lungs occasionally!

Thanks very much to the Crediton Country Courier who let me use their photographs. It is very kind of them.

Now, below Folkus is another small photograph. Yes, it’s time for a small rant. The photo is of a 20mph sign situated in church lane. There are several of them spread along the lane as well as limit entry signs at the ends of the speed limit area. Please, please, please abide by these limits. I know, I am equally to blame when I forget about the limit but I do usually slow down after driving a short distance. There are others who would probably be breaking the limit if it was still at 30mph! We must all do better! Mind you, it does seem daft to have a 30mph limit covering both Glebelands and Hescane Park. Similarly, it is also daft to have a 60mph limit in the country lanes and find a 40mph limit on the old A30. Rant over!!!

Time now then for the school calendar:

3rd September – Autumn Term begins

27th-31st October – Half term

17th December – End of Autumn Term

That’s all I have for now for the school. I’d just like to give a small update on the Dartmoor Railway. The outcome of negotiations with an American buyer are expected by the end of August. The bush telegraph seems quite positive about the future. In the meantime volunteers have been manning a mini-buffet at Okehampton on Sundays to provide victuals for the passengers from the First Great Western trains from Exeter. Volunteer work continues on refitting the “Thumper” unit up at Meldon quarry .
