A Parish Meeting was instituted in Cheriton Bishop in 1894 and the first Council of eight elected councillors met on the 13th December in that year. The Council meets on the second Monday in each month at the Methodist Chapel, Cheriton Cross at 7.30 pm and members of the public are invited to attend. Provision is made at the beginning of every meeting for electors to address the Council on any topic. At the discretion of the Chairman a meeting may not take place in August.
The eight councillors are either elected or co-opted onto the Council and are subject to re-election every four years. A Councillor is elected Chairman for a term in office usually of two years.
Administrative matters are dealt with by a salaried Clerk to the Council:-

WOODLEIGH JUNCTION
To get anywhere from Cheriton Bishop nowadays it is simply a matter of driving half a mile east from Cheriton Cross to our new bridge over the A 30 dual carriageway. Then cross the
... bridge to get to Exeter or Tedburn St. Mary or turn left at the bridge for Okehampton and Cornwall. It was not always so easy.

In 1978 when the A30 trunk road was constructed an "at level" staggered junction was the only way to cross or join the main road. By 1991 the Parish Council noted that as traffic densities increased, particularly in the summer months, so accidents also increased. Several people
..... had died in these accidents. The Council began to maintain a record of all accidents and in. 1995 under the Chairmanship of Peter Werran the Council arranged meetings that our.Member of Parliament, Angela Browning and officials of the Department of Transport and Highways Agency attended. At these meetings the Council's position was that no remedy.other that a bridge over the A30 would be effective. All agreed that this was the ideal but.that no money was available for such a construction.

The Council then arranged two petitions - one to the conservative administration and the second, after an election, to the new Labour government. Peter Werran served for three
(two year) terms as Chairman of the Parish Council in order to continue the campaign..The toll of road casualties and deaths at Woodleigh rose and at last the seriousness of the situation was recognised by the Government and in early 1999 it was announced that at last.a bridge was to be built. By September 2000 the bridge itself was open to traffic and the entire complex was officially opened in February 2001.
